Nathan Finney Obituary

Nathan Allen Finney, 42, of Bloomington, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2023 in Shelbyville, IN.

He was born August 30, 1981 in Bloomington, IN. to Charles A. Finney and Roxann (Baker) Finney.

Nathan graduated from Bedford North Lawrence High School in 1999.

Nathan married Audrey (Brown) Finney on June 6, 2020 and she survives.

He is also survived by his daughter, Bryn; his son, Baker; his mother; his brother, Brandt (wife, Roane) Finney; his nephew, Cameron; among numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Nathan is preceded in death by his father, Charles Finney.

Nathan’s drive for entrepreneurship began after graduating from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and at 23, he successfully developed and opened a mortgage company. After selling the company in 2009, he moved to Tampa, Florida and worked as a Financial Investment advisor.  It was in Tampa where he fell in love with Craft Beer and returned to Bloomington, Indiana to embark on opening his own craft beer bar.  In October 2012, he brought his vision to life and The Tap opened their doors. Two years later, Finney adjacently built The Tap Brewery, to provide a niche offering for The Tap, brewing and serving their own beer. In 2015, a 2nd location of The Tap opened in downtown Indianapolis.

In August 2018, Finney created a 2nd concept in Bloomington, Social Cantina, this time filling the void in the local market for a modern Mexican restaurant. In February 2019 another concept came to life and SmokeWorks was born, again calling Bloomington, Indiana home.  This concept was influenced by Finney’s mother, Roxann, whose homemade recipes inspired an array of sides served alongside Memphis Barbecue.

In 2019, when the previous owner of the Bloomington staple, Yogi’s, went to sell their brand – Finney was top of mind to purchase the brand rights, as they felt he would do the popular neighborhood bar, opened since 1993, justice. Finney re-opened the nostalgic Indiana University sports bar.

From 2021, Nathan explosively expanded Finney Hospitality Group, opening The Tap West Lafayette (2021), Social Cantina Carmel (2021), Social Cantina Downtown Indianapolis (2022), Social Cantina Mishawaka (2022), and Kind Car Wash (2023).

Finney was additionally awarded a contract to bring The Tap to the Indianapolis International Airport, which will open late 2023.

Undoubtedly, Nathan had an emphatic passion for creating and growing businesses. He relentlessly showed up for his work, but he showed up even stronger for his family. He was an incredible father and husband. Nathan was happiest together as a family in warm weather, and he fulfilled his dream of moving himself and his family to Florida in 2020. Nathan will forever be carried in our hearts as a man who stood for hard work, who loved his family more than anything, and a man with unwavering loyalty to his friends. His legacy will be carried on through his wife, children, and Finney Hospitality Group.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Henke Hall of Champions, 701 E. 17th St., Bloomington, IN. 47408.

Funeral Directors, Greg Parks, Sheila Parks, Stuart Parks, and Darin Schutt are honored to serve Nathan’s family.
