Obituary

Emma Lucille "Lucy" Voelker, 91, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2014.

Born Jan. 3, 1923, in Grayson County, Kentucky, Lucy was the oldest child of William Guy and Pearlie Mae (Hack) Preston.

Her family moved to Indiana when she was 12 years old. She attended Waldron High School and was the last surviving member of her 1941 graduating class.

Lucy was employed at W.H. Woolworth's in Shelbyville and later at Standard Grocery, where she worked for 28 years until her retirement.

Lucy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joe Social Club. She volunteered at numerous organizations including the Cancer Association of Shelby County, who publicly acknowledged her contributions in The Shelbyville News and subsequently awarded her a plaque of recognition and appreciation for her volunteerism.

Among her hobbies of gardening, reading, embroidering and playing euchre, she loved going to auctions with her close companion of many years, the late Robert Fischer, of Morristown. She always looked forward to the annual trips to the beaches of Florida and the mountains of North Carolina with her family.

Lucy is survived by her adopted sons: John W. Voelker and wife, Kathryn, of Indianapolis; and James R. Voelker, M.D. and wife, Christina, of Carmel; two grandchildren, Lauren and Kathryn; her sister, Lottie Jane Mills and husband, Thomas, of Johnson City, Texas; and brother, Amos Woodford Preston and wife, Beulah, of Shelbyville.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister, Frances Merrick.

She was loved by her family and many friends and her gentle spirit will be greatly missed.
