Alvin W. Gaffney, 89, of Shelbyville died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at his daughter's residence.
Born June 9, 1922, in Morgantown, he was the son of William and Pearl (Waggerman) Gaffney. He married Virginia Moore on July 1, 1945, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 31, 2010.
Survivors include son, Michael (Rosie) Gaffney of Greenfield; daughter, Vicki (Ralph) Lockridge of Shelbyville; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Evelyn Cravens of Trafalgar and Doris Strange and Delores DeHo, both of Shelbyville.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Jenny Jo Jollif; a son, Ricky Joe Gaffney; seven sisters; and a brother.
Mr. Gaffney had been a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II.
He had been employed with the Indiana State Highway Department for 18 years, retiring in 1984.
Mr. Gaffney was a member of the American Legion in Franklin.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service and Crematory, 703 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Salvation Army Capt. Shannon Benner officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by local military organizations.
