Willie J. Highfield

Willie Jackson Highfield, 90, of Shelbyville died Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at his residence. Born Jan. 28, 1921, in Trinity, Ky., he was the son of James and Emma (Bayless) Highfield. He married Grace Mattix on May 13, 1960, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 1, 1981. He married Julia Swift on June 29, 1990, and she survives. Other survivors include sons, Charles (Jancie) Stephenson of Edinburgh and Steven (Nancy) Stephenson of Shelbyville; daughter, Melissa (Dan) Cheatham of Shelbyville; son-in-law, Drew Norvell of Shelbyville; stepdaughters, Katrina (Joe) Ellison of Rushville, Cheryl Preston, Christa (Wayne) Stiers and Tamara (Paul) Carter, all of Shelbyville; stepsons, Joseph (Paula) Swift Jr. of Indianapolis, Brent Swift of Edinburgh and Bryan (Alicya) Swift of Greenfield; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Frye and Gracie Penrod, both of Kentucky. He also was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Wilma Jean Highfield, Brenda Norvell; stepdaughter, Eldine Swift; brothers, Bruce and Elmer Highfield; and sisters, Lizzie Clark, Beretha Kennedy, Pauline Dunigan and Bell Telly. Mr. Highfield was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He had been a welder employed by Amtrak for 12 years. Mr. Highfield was a member of First Baptist Church, Eagles Lodge No. 766, American Legion Post No. 70, Swingin' Singles of Indianapolis and the Shelbyville Luv Bugs. He enjoyed woodworking. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service & Crematory, 703 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. David Love officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by local veterans organizations. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or Hospice of Shelby County. An online guest book may be signed at www.murphyparks.com .
