Robert J. Jones

Robert J. Jones, 82, of Shelbyville died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at his residence. Born Sept. 24, 1928, in Colliers, W.Va ., he was the son of Alpha L. and Sarah (Holliday) Jones. He married Betty Mae Surber on Dec. 4, 1952, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 3, 2010. Survivors include sons, Douglas (wife, Mary) Jones, Donald (wife, Penny) Jones and Raymond D. Jones, all of Shelbyville, Robert E. Jones of Greenfield and William (wife, Neta) Jones of Homer; daughters, Roberta (husband, Douglas) Morford of Greenfield and Sarah (husband, John) Helfer and Charlotte (husband, Joey) Keller, both of Shelbyville; special friend, Tina Jones, 27 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, a sister and a brother. Mr. Jones had been employed in manufacturing at KCL and had been a former vice president of the United Paper Workers union. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1951 to 1953. He enjoyed gardening and NASCAR racing. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Robert Prather officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by local veterans organizations.
