Calkins Calkins Published: Saturday, June 5, 2010 7:11 AM US/eastern Robert D. "Bob" Calkins, 80, of Shelbyville died Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. Born Jan. 17, 1930, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Forrest K. and Irene V. (Englert) Calkins. He married Joan Ankenbruck on Feb. 3, 1951, and she survives. Other survivors include his sons, Terry (wife, Julie) of Medway, Ohio, and Dan (wife, Joni) of Lexington, Ky.; daughters, Linda (husband, Steve) Alspaugh of Indianapolis, Michelle (husband, Ricky) Wrenn of Cordesville, S.C., Kathleen (husband, Tim) Simpson of Shelbyville; brother, Jerry (wife, Barbara) of Fort Wayne; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Jimmy. Mr. Calkins was employed with General Electric Co., later known as Wellman Thermal Systems, and retired as vice president of corporate quality. He retired in 2000 after 50 years of service and continued working part time with Wellman as a consultant in quality control. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he served in a variety of capacities; and was a longtime member of Knights of Columbus, serving as grand knight in 1978 and 1979. Along with his family and buddies, he enjoyed many outdoor hobbies, including fishing, boating and camping. One of his favorite pastimes was collecting and watching old movies. A rosary service will be at 3:30 p.m., with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service and Crematory, 703 S. Harrison St. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 125 E. Broadway St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or Indiana Crossroads of America Council Boy Scouts of America (checks may be made to CACBSA), 7125 Fall Creek Road North, Indianapolis, IN 46256.
