Michael R. Babbitt, 83, of Shelbyville, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2026,
at MHP Medical Center. He was born on September 28, 1942, in New Castle,
Indiana, to Marshall Foch Babbitt and Juanita Jeanne (Sutton) Babbitt. Mike is
survived by his wife, Kathy J. (Cover) Babbitt, with whom he shared over 45
loving years of marriage.
Mike graduated from New Castle High School with the Class of 1960. Following
his graduation, he joined the United States Air Force, where he served his
country honorably. After moving to Shelbyville in 1966 and serving in various
community roles for over two decades, he spent 32 years as an owner and
operator of a local Allstate Insurance Agency, retiring in 2019.
A dedicated community member, Mike belonged to several organizations,
including the Lions Club, the Elks Club, and American Legion Post #70. He also
served as a past president and board member of the Shelbyville Parks Board. An
avid golfer and pickleball player, Mike also loved being outdoors and enjoyed
fishing and camping.
In addition to his wife, Mike is survived by his children: daughter Lori Lynn
Babbitt; sons Marshall Todd (Jean) Babbitt and Michael Tyler (Kasia) Babbitt; and
daughter Natalie Marie (Rodney) McCracken. He leaves behind a large and
loving family of grandchildren: Nicholas Angelo Veneri, Brittney Danielle (Justin)
Douglas, Steven William (Alyssa) Babbitt, Sara Lewis, Columbus "Cole" Clark
West, Taylor Marie Babbitt, Jadon Clay McCracken, Julia Elizabeth McCracken,
Josie Marie McCracken, Jemma Kate McCracken, James Thomas McCracken,
and Anna Maria Babbitt. He will also be missed by his 15 great-grandchildren, his
sister, Sharon Kay Clore, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his parents and his sister, Pamela Sue Snell.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on
Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, located at 703 S.
Harrison Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176.
A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at the funeral home, with Reverend
Corlis Dees officiating. Burial will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery, with military
honors conducted by local veteran organizations.
