Louise Ann Griffey's Obituary

Louise Ann Griffey, 97, passed away on Friday, April 3rd, 2026, just 23 days short of her 98th birthday. Ann was born April 26th, 1928, in Shelbyville, Indiana, one year before the stock market crashed and the country was plunged into the Great Depression. Before she became an adult the country entered World War II. Her parents were Grace Elizabeth (Anderson) Fuller and Ervin Hugh Fuller.

Ann began working at the age of 12 in her mother’s restaurant during her lunch hour from school. At 13 she received a permit to work in the canning factories because the men were away at war and women and children took their place. The family knew hard times and rationing during the Depression and the war, and her help was always needed to support the family. She left Shelbyville High School in her junior year and was proud of the GED she achieved at the age of 47. Ann worked at several factories in Shelbyville and Indianapolis, farmed with her husband, and retired from the Shelbyville Post Office as a rural carrier. She owned and operated the Diet Pantry in Shelbyville for 14 years, the first health food store in town.

Ann married Frank Griffey on June 23rd, 1950, and they enjoyed 51 years of marriage until his death on March 3rd, 2001. They camped frequently and belonged to and hosted several camping clubs at their home. After Frank’s death Ann traveled and camped extensively with her best friend Norma, and she eventually purchased a second home in Florida where she spent 15 years and became part of a warm and loving community in Ft. Meade.

She was a member of the Mother of Twins Club of Indiana, Zonta, the Evangelical Methodist Church, the SW Athletic Boosters, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was a devoted fan of any sport her children or grandchildren participated in. She was known for her artistic skills, her creativeness, her foresight and ability to solve issues. She was an excellent cook and seamstress. Because of the poverty she grew up in she was generous with others whose needs were unmet.

Ann is survived by her children: Debbie Griffey, Donna Griffey, and Brett ( Jerri) Griffey, Edinburgh; grandchildren Nick Herndon, Jeremy (Chris) Griffey, Jessica Griffey, Lisa (Nick) Nicklyn, Ashley (Brian) Verseman, Michaela Griffey; great-grandchildren Tyler Herndon, Kaylie and Steven Griffey, Luke and Scarlett Verseman, and Alexander Nicklyn. She is also survived by one brother, Donald (Jackie) Fuller, and devoted friends Joy, Karen, Bobbi, and David.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her infant son Michael, her daughter Pamala May, her sisters Frances Walton and Juanita Kantzer.

The family wishes to thank Homeview Health and Rehabilitation Center of Franklin for the excellent care she received during her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Ann to Senior Services, 2120 Intelliplex Drive, Suite 101, Shelbyville, IN 46176 for scholarships for seniors who wish to participate in activities.
