Jane “Memaw” Spurling, 82, passed away on Friday, September 18th, 2026 at Timber Creek Village after a life lived exactly the way she wanted – with her own opinions, her own rules, and very little concern for what anyone else thought.

She was born March 23rd, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to George McKinney and Katherine (Sexton) McKinney. She was one of a kind, outspoken, independent, and always up for a handful of shenanigans. She knew what she wanted to do and wasn’t afraid to do it. If you happened to disagree with her, well, Jane was pretty confident her opinion was the right one anyway.

Jane had many interests and led a busy life at Timber Creek. She loved to sunbathe, plant flowers, win at bingo, and “borrow” one single jigsaw puzzle piece so she could always be the one to finish the puzzle. In addition, she was a caretaker to her friends Ann and Don during their final days. She also had a very strong opinion of precisely how clean the residents’ windows should be, so she would frequently be seen washing windows, smiling along the way. She took immense pride in looking her best and always made sure she “looked like a million bucks” just in case Kenny Rodgers happened to show up.

One of the greatest loves of her life, second to Kenny Rodgers, was her cat Tiger. Acquiring Tiger was not an easy task, but she persevered and in normal memaw fashion, overcame every obstacle possible to make it happen. Tiger is very blessed to now be cared for by Haley, one of Timber Creeks’ wonderful CNAs.

Among her closest friends were Maggie, Sharron, and Ann. You could capture their contagious happiness when they were together. The last seven years of Jane’s life at Timber Creek were the best years she has ever had. She lived more life during those seven years than she ever had before – making friends, creating memories, laughing, and making sure her mischievous occasions were talking about for years after.

Jane’s granddaughter, Britney, was her guardian and daily presence in her life. She loved her memaw dearly and wanted her to be comfortable, happy, and well cared for. Britney was there when she was needed making sure Jane had someone in her corner. Their relationship was filled with love, memories, and naturally a few strong opinions along the way. They frequently referred to themselves as “partners in crime”. One of their best antics was frequently re-arranging the Timber Creek Village (TCV) letters in the library and letting the staff believe it might be a ghost.

Jane will be remembered for her love of sunshine and nature, her impeccable style, her beloved Tiger, her friendships, and her knack of finding a little trouble wherever she went. Most of all she will be remembered for simply being Jane – and she wouldn’t want it any other way.

May the sun be shining, flowers be blooming, Kenny be singing, Tiger be close by, and may nobody ever try to tell you what to do again.

Jane is survived by her children, Kathy Gore and Chris Spurling; YOUNGER twin brother Gino McKinney of Arizona; her grandchildren, Britney Bannon (Kyle), Ryan Piercy (Deanna), Kayla Spurling, and Hailee Baldelli.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Geo and Kay; her daughter, Mandy Piercy; her sister, Maureen Miles; and her brother, Dennis McKinney.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 25, 2026 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Murphy-Parks Funeral Services, 703 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville, IN 46176.

Funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at Murphy- Parks Funeral Services with Pastor Keith Dover officiating. The family invites everyone to celebrate Jane’s love of the Colts by wearing Colts attire to both the visitation and service.

The family would also like to share a special thanks to the staff of Timber Creek for constantly going above and beyond their roles to make sure memaw was happy; As well as a special thanks to Brighton Hospice for their care and compassion.
