Gerda Helena Dwigans, 91, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at Heritage House Convalescent Center in Shelbyville.
She was born on Nov. 16, 1920, in Berlin, Germany, to the late William and Agnus Fuhrmann.
Gerda married Joseph Dwigans on Sept. 5, 1954, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 2001.
Survivors include step-daughter, Joan Ivey of Indianapolis; sister, Gertrude Westphal and nephew, Dieter Westphal, both of Berlin; friend, Terrie Young of Shelbyville and step-granddaughter Cathy (husband, Steve) Hoffman of South Bend.
Terrie Young, close friend, considered Gerda a blessing as their friendship grew through the years.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a twin sister; brothers, Heinz Fuhrmann and William Fuhrmann, and step-son, Jerry Dwigans.
Gerda came to the United States in 1947 and became a citizen in 1958.
She was employed with Paul Shoe Store in Shelbyville for seven years.
A lifelong homemaker, Gerda loved sewing, camping and motorcycle riding in years past. She very much enjoyed time with friends.
She was blessed with the people of the Heritage House family who gave her much enjoyment and love in the latter years of her life.
No public service will be held.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage House Activities Department, 2309 S. Miller St., Shelbyville, IN 46176 or to Hospice of Decatur/Shelby County, 1201 N. Lincoln St., Ste. A, Greensburg, IN 47240.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
