Edna Scott Parker

Edna Scott Parker, 115, of Shelbyville, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Heritage House Convalescent Center. Born April 20, 1893, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary (Eads) Scott. She married James Earl Parker on April 12, 1913, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 1939. Survivors include grandchildren, Donald (wife, Charlene) Parker of Shelby County, Barbara Saletnig of Delaware, Beverly Curnutt and Vicki (husband, Ed) Kozlow, both of Michigan, and Russell (wife, Bridgette) Parker of Bloomington; two step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Clifford Parker and Earl Junior Parker; a daughter-in-law, Dorothea Parker; two sisters, Georgia Fateley and Opal Osborne; and a brother, Harry Scott. Mrs. Parker attended Atwood Elementary School in Bengal, then later graduated from Franklin High School. She then received her teaching certificate from Franklin College on May 30, 1911. Her teaching career was at Marietta and Bengal one-room schools. Mrs. Parker was a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church since 1925 and a member of the Eastern Star since May 20, 1947. She was recognized as the world's oldest person on Aug. 13, 2007. Mrs. Parker's favorite pastime was reciting poetry. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church, 4449 Smithland Road, with Pastor Bryan Trotter and Russell Parker officiating. Burial will be in Miller Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Gilead Baptist Church , 4449 Smithland Road, Shelbyville, IN 46176, for its playground equipment fund.
